A detection method based on sensitization of a squared double differentiated signal is developed which discriminates the turbulent zones from laminar zones quite accurately. The procedure adopts a variable threshold and a variable hold time of the order of the Kolmogorov time scale. The output file so generated, includes all the information for further analysis of the turbulent signal.

The coherence function of sound waves propagating through an intermittently turbulent atmosphere is calculated theoretically. Intermittency mechanisms due to both the turbulent energy cascade (intrinsic intermittency) and spatially uneven production (global intermittency) are modeled using ensembles of quasiwavelets (QWs), which are analogous to turbulent eddies. The intrinsic intermittency is ...

The phenomenon of on-off intermittency is studied in two coupled double-well Duffing oscillators with stochastic driving. We demonstrate that by using slow harmonic modulation applied to an accessible system parameter, the intermittent chaotic attractors can be completely eliminated. The influence of noise is also investigated. Power-law scaling of the average laminar time with a critical expon...

Intermittency, i.e., extreme fluctuations at small scales, causes the deviation of turbulence statistics from Kolmogorov’s 1941 theoretical predictions. Intermittency effects are especially strong for Lagrangian statistics. Our understanding of how Lagrangian intermittency manifests, however, is still elusive. Here, we study the Lagrangian intermittency in the framework of an exact, yet unclose...

A bifurcating system subject to multiplicative noise can display on-off intermittency. Using a canonical example, we investigate the extreme sensitivity of the intermittent behavior to the nature of the noise. Through a perturbative expansion and numerical studies of the probability density function of the unstable mode, we show that intermittency is controlled by the ratio between the departur...

Orthonormal wavelet expansions are applied to atmospheric surface layer velocity and temperature measurements above a uniform bare soil ‘surface that exhibit a long inertial subrange energy spectrum. In order to investigate intermittency effects on Kolmogorov’s theory, a direct relation between the &h-order structure function and the wavelet coefficients is derived. This relation is used to exa...

An overview is given of important properties of spatial and temporal intermittency, including evidence of its appearance in fluids, magnetofluids and plasmas, and its implications for understanding of heliospheric plasmas. Spatial intermittency is generally associated with formation of sharp gradients and coherent structures. The basic physics of structure generation is ideal, but when dissipat...

The intermittency in turbulent magnetic field fluctuations has been observed to scale with the amount of magnetic helicity injected into a laboratory plasma. An unstable spheromak injected into the MHD wind tunnel of the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment displays turbulent magnetic and plasma fluctuations as it relaxes into a Taylor state. The level of intermittency of this turbulence is determin...

One-dimensional maps showing chaotic intermittency with discontinuous reinjection probability density functions are studied. For these maps, the mechanism possesses two different processes. The M function methodology is applied to analyze complete and determine function. In M(x) continuous non-differentiable. Theoretical equations found for Finally, theoretical results compared numerical data f...

We examine the effects of turbulent intermittency on the deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) in Type Ia supernovae. The Zel’dovich mechanism for DDT requires the formation of a nearly isothermal region of mixed ash and fuel that is larger than a critical size. We primarily consider the hypothesis by Khokhlov et al. and Niemeyer and Woosley that the nearly isothermal, mixed region is pro...
